Couture and costuming

Just now a young lady from the U dropped into the shop to pick up a jingling bracelet for her odalisque costume for a Halloween party.

She tipped me off that our coin jewelry is going to be fast-moving this season due at least in part to a steamy fashion spread in W magazine, featuring Kate Moss in a Turkish bath and dancing costume. (Go Kate! We may not look much alike, but she's nearly my age, anyway.)

This morning a statuesque sorority sister came by for a beaded headdress, to portray Cleopatra, and yet another told me she's going to be Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, and needed a gold scarf.

I do love this season of costumes!

Here are a couple of photos that my best friend snapped of me trying on shiny things from the store. Please pay no attention to my Superman blue hair. What's the point of owning one's own business if one can't also make the dress code otherwise?

In the first picture, a copper colored satin skirt with a trumpet flounce, and a stretch velvet overskirt with metallic palette spangles. The overskirt is made by Nancy Fetzek here in town, and features an adjustible velcroed waistband.

The second shows that same lovely satin underskirt and a top skirt of black stretch velvet and chiffon with silver sequins. There's only one of each of these items, the black skirt is a size small.

The choli top you see in these pictures was made by Candace Davis of Calista Designs, also in town here. We have a selection of styles, colors and sizes of her work.

And this beaded collar and earring set is by Spindler's Web. I love the way it hangs, and the vintage feel of the violet and chocolate color scheme!

It was such a gorgeous afternoon for showing off! You're welcome to come in and try them on too.

The Many Healing Aspects of Henna

I have been amazed lately at the diversity of meaningful hennas that I have been doing lately. I feel so blessed to be asked to participate through mehndi design.

A few weeks ago I had a spontaneous request for a henna workshop. Turns out it was for a group of women who were gathering for a therapy meeting. The organizer was looking for a body positive activity for these young ladies. We all had so much fun learning about henna and drawing on each other. Looks like I will be doing more of those meetings in the future.

Last week, I had a request from a new friend to apply a henna on his forearm down his first two fingers. His idea was to watch his cravings for cigarettes fade as he watched the henna fade. What an awesome idea! I hope it was helpful to him in his journey to quit smoking.

As always, I am so honored to be allowed to decorate big pregnant bellies. A woman came into the store to get her belly henna-ed. She was more than ready to pop. I had a huge canvas to work with. She was hoping to have her baby in the next couple days so the henna would be a part of a film that she was going to participate in about natural childbirth. Unfortunately, she came into the store 3 weeks later to purchase a henna kit for herself so she could touch up her design. Two weeks overdue and looking miserable, she was hoping to have her baby before the deadline that her doctor set. I wish the henna could have helped sped here delivery in that case, but I did love her idea of having my henna in her film about birth. Maybe next time...

About a month ago, I got a special request from a woman to decorate her torso as a surprise for her husband for their 30th wedding anniversary. I went to her house to meet her. It took a lot of nerve for her to unrobe for me so that I could decorate her breast and belly with beautiful blossoming flowers for their special day. The design turned out so well. I didn't get a photo due to the explicit nature, but I will surely remember that one in my mind's eye. I hope her husband was plesantly surprised!

I am excited to see what will be the next request I get for a special henna design. Got a henna question or challenge for me? Want to make an event a little more special? Let's see what beautiful creation we can design together.

Hoops, specials, and special orders

Dear Readers,

Today it snowed. Which is kind of irritating, when it's nearly the middle of April already. But I know it's spring. Here's how:

1) I have only left gloves anymore.
2) I have to dodge the geese on the road on my drive home.
3) I have already spotted the first tall-bike of the year riding down 4th St.
4) Our customers are already buying hula hoops and anklets!

B.L.I.S. Hoops has three sizes of wonderful, colorful handmade hoops on display in our shop. Come on over and give them a spin! Wonderful exercise and wonderful fun. Their maker, Koren Walsh, also has classes available in hooping. It made my day to see one young man buy his girl that sort of ring.
Sarah and I have been thinking of having a hooping contest. Who's game?

We also have put together an in-store catalog for special orders of bellydance regalia, so if your best friend got the last scarf in the right color, or you suddenly need six matching dancing scimitars and coin headdresses, we can make it happen.

We also have a store full of fabulous bargains for the month of April on sterling and gemstone charms, scented oils, loose stones, statues, toe rings, and political bumperstickers, keychains and magnets. Why? Because it's time for a change!

I love this Dinkytown location because we have so much space and awesome windows to see the real world, but though we have a lot of jewelry, it doesn't pop out at you and punch you in the face as much as good jewelry should.

This week at SaraCura it's Alice every day, since Sarah is traversing the wilds of the Tuscon Gem and Mineral Show, one of the biggest trade shows for that field on the continent. Who knows what wonders she will return with! The frogs and I miss her, of course.

Don’t be surprised when you walk in at it looks different.
Now the jewelry is much more visible, the artist items are consolidated and better highlighted,
and there is so much more room to move around.

Henna Workshops are back
Now that the holidays are over, we can get back to some henna fun.
We have 4 dates to choose from:

Saturday, February 2nd – from 2 to 4pm
Tuesday, February 19th – from 6 to 8pm
Wednesday, February 27th – from 6 to 8pm
Thursday, March 6th – from 6 to 8pm

Please sign up early if you want to participate.
Space is limited so everyone can get personal attention.

Come learn more about henna and get a chance to use it first hand. Sarah will talk a little bit about henna and how to apply it, but most of the time, you will be playing with henna yourself. Henna in applicator bottles will be available for everyone to use, with Sarah’s guidance, as well as a finishing seal to protect your new henna art. Workshops are limited to 5 people.
Price is $18/ $15 with student ID.Bonus – everything in the store will be 10% off for workshop participants the evening of the event!

Fancy Maroon Set

The top is velvety fabric, as is the top part of the skirt.
The bottom part of the skirt is sheer chiffon.
This outfit is covered in beaded fringe.

Turquoise Top, Skirt, and Sash set

This set of 3 pieces has a Spanish feel to it. The tie top has fancy sleeves. The skirt is long and very full. The sash can be worn at the hips, shoulders, or head.

Blue/ Purple Top, Skirt and Veil Set

Once again, this top has full sleeves. The skirt is long and full. The veil is 45' x 108'.

Fancy Black and Gold Set

The top is velvety with sequin-lined holes. This skirt has a snug velvety top and full sheer bottom with lots of gold sequins and a slit up the leg.

The sheet chiffon top is loaded with sequins and has full open arms. The skirt is multi layers with lots of sequins and palettes.

These open crocheted dresses are covered with gold beads. They are bigger than they appear, since they will stretch quite a bit. We have one gold with gold beads, and one black with gold beads.

Rainbow Palette Dress

This is a very lightweight sheer dress with tons of rainbow colored palettes decorating it. It is about knee length.

Chiffon Tie Tops

We have four tops available in purple, black, red and white. Most are quite sheer - the red one has a lining - and they all have full arms.

Fresh flavors at SaraCura!

It's pretty bitter outside our door right now, but not within! I spent a couple days last week helping bottle up some of SaraCura's new scents like Juniper Berry and Grapefruit, and restocking favorites such as Red Egyptian Musk, Vanilla and Jasmine. Spilling a little here and there opened my sense of smell right up again, let me tell you! It was a sensual treat in the winter, when that dry air takes so much sensation down, and not even any calories. Good for the skin, too. Those 10 mL bottles of ours are great for application to your skin, and if you like you can pop out the roller and put a few drops in a hot bath or on a burner.

Grapefruit, by the way, grows as an evergreen tree like most other citrus fruit. It was originally known as the Forbidden Fruit of Barbados, and was first documented by the European world in 1750. The bright, acidic sweet aroma of this oil can shine up your whole day, and make you feel fresher, younger, more awake! It also has antiseptic and aromatic properties.

Cards, Cards, and more Cards...

We have had some great local paper artists bring in their work lately.

What a great use for recycled wallpaper! It's hard to see in this photo,
but the center mandala is three dimensional and very unique.
Q-T-Pi cards represent many occasions, holidays, birthdays, luck and more.

Miriam Simons's cards have been an instant hit, selling well from the first day.
Her designs include Hanukkah menorahs, Christmas trees, and relationships.

Juan T. Parker was tired on not finding multi-racial cards so he created his own line.

He has holiday cards as well as sweet family images.

Goddess Notes' creator, Mary Wright, paints all the images on her inspirational cards herself.

There are over a dozen different images in her line.

This photo does E. Katie Holm's images no favors. Her photography is bold in black and white.

She has gift tags, greeting cards, and prints.

New Artist Consignment

We have been receiving a lot of new art on consignment.
It's very exciting. New stuff every week.

Here's some of our newest items:

These are some of Chester's latest creations. He uses found wood and paints with water color and pens. Great colors and bold images.

Our newest consigner is also our youngest. Birch is just 13 years old. Hurrah for young business women! We sold a pair before we could even get the display in a perminent location. Not bad!

Want to keep warm on these cold winter nights? Dark Forest Designs has made these hand warmers with locally grown flax to help when a toasty open fire is not available.

Dragon's Treasures creator Kelly has had her lovely gemstone jewelry in the store almost since the beginning. Her newest creations are these unique hand-made purses with gemstone accents. Each one is different. These are only two samples of these beauties.
